January 1965 is where the Shelby Mustang legend all started. The infamous Shelby GT350 was a true race car that Carroll Shelby gave only a thin mask of streetability. The power plant was HiPo 289 with 306 hp (K code engines). Loud exhaust pipes, stiff racing suspension and barren interior (no rear seat) reminded you that you were driving a race car, not a grocery getter. Starting in 1966 the GT350 became more subdued with better street manners and creature comforts.

Ford offered the Shelby GT350 for sale in only one body style; fastback. And in 1965 you could only get one color; Wimbleton White with blue Le Mans racing stripes. The color choices broadened in 1966 with the addition of Raven Black, Candyapple Red, Ivy Green Metallic and Sapphire Blue Metallic.
