This is certainly one of the prime collectible Mustangs; a 1968 big block 390-4bbl convertible and it's in gorgeous shape. The Acapulco Blue with the immaculate Parchment interior and convertible top are a very striking combo. And that undercarriage is just a work of art. It literally could have just rolled off the assembly line back in 1968.

Shipped new to Hayes Motor Company in Sioux City, Nebraska, this muscle car was delivered to its new owner nine days after it was built. Aesthetically the car differs from new with its new parchment interior rather than the original medium blue, and the new parchment top matches the new interior and the white GT "C" stripe better than the original black top. It's hard to argue with the result!

Marketers hyped the 1968 Ford Mustang as "The Great Original" and "the most exciting car on the American road." The shape certainly helps: Crease lines ran from the expertly finished upper front fenders to loop around simulated scoops ahead of the rear wheels before running forward into the lower doors. The 1968 grille, more deeply inset and retaining its galloping horse, is as new. New GT fog lamps seem to "float" within the grille. Stainless trim from the reveal moldings down are as new, the top is new, the paint is fresh, straight and clean, the taillights and other chrome accents are new and the chrome wheels with their Firestone Wide Oval F70x14 tires are new. The result is an extremely attractive, eye catching car done to a very high standard!

With federal safety and emissions standards now in force nationwide, some Mustang engines were detuned for '68, but the 390's rating actually went up a little to 335. This engine, original to the car, was completely rebuilt along with the rest of the car and has gone fewer than 20 miles since it was finished. Aside from the new paint and chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid, there's a full compliment of ECS Automotive stickers and decals, date coded spark plugs and battery cables, the correct Autolite battery and more. Inspection stickers dot the firewall while a re-cored radiator sits up front. Correct reproduction hoses carry all fluids from antifreeze to power steering. The original Holley carb sits under the air cleaner and the original distributor sits up front with the original water pump. Suffice to say there's not a lot of room for improvement here!

Engineers are a persistent lot, and all '68 Mustangs got more detail refinements. The front suspension was again tweaked to improve ride and handling. Just as laudable, the available power front-disc brakes switched from fixed to "floating" calipers which provided extra stopping power with no extra pedal effort. Ford recognized the necessity of front discs for hot Mustangs by making them a mandatory option with the 390 and 427 engines. For its restoration, new steering components, new brake lines, hoses and hard parts along with all new fuel components were installed underneath this car. Correctly applied red oxide primer with black overspray shields crisp sheet metal and inspection marks and details abound under here. Ford's 9" rear with 3.25 gears runs out back with a full rebuild. There's a new, correct exhaust system from head pipes to resonators to the crossflow muffler to the quad tips. Bare metal parts are protected for the long haul, though, so get out and enjoy this one!

Slide behind the deluxe wheel and sit on the freshly restored seat. There's a new wood grain knob on the Hurst shifter to keep your right hand busy while new pedal pads feel great under your feet. The fresh dash rides under a new dash pad, new carpeting and new sill plates make the floor look like new and new door panels sit at your side. The original AM radio works in its location above the very cool roll top console door, the gauges all work and all lights and indicators light as they should. Beauty and function? You bet!

From its deep finish to its restored chassis this is a 'stang on the move. This '68 is the very definition of an investment grade Mustang! A convertible, numbers matching, Marti report and a very cool big block and four speed combo—they don't make '68 Mustangs much hotter than this!

1968 GT/CS Mustang in search of someone with LOTS of time to restore!

If you've got the heart to tackle it, this California Special could be a great little diamond in the rough with your name on it! This Classic Mustang almost looks restorable until you see the shot of the rear of the body....because there's nothing left! It was either hacked off by a maniac with a torch and chainsaw, or just rusted away to literally nothing. Wow, that's a big restoration bite to chew.

It's got a 289 C-code, C4 automatic, Power Steering, factory Air Conditioning, AM Radio, Tinted Glass, etc. It's Meadowlark Yellow, which isn't the most popular color, but not the worst either. Nicely optioned and of course worth something as it's a limited edition 1968 California Special Mustang. How much it's worth is another question. If it was a big block car it would be worth considering, but with just a plane jane 289-2bbl there's just too much work to justify saving this one.

As another January comes to an end it means another record breaking year for Classic Mustangs crossing the auction block at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. The poor economy only slightly dampened the spirits of bidders, but only on the less rare cars. The really exciting Mustangs still commanded amazing prices, with the usual BJ trend of a few buyers paying way too much. You may not agree, but see below and judge for yourself.

1969 Mustang Boss 429 - Sale Price $198,000
This Wimbledon White specimen of pavement pounding Mustang lore fetched a hefty price. Being one of just a few legendary Boss 429 cars certainly helped. Let's face it. The semi-hemi 429 engine is what makest this car a legend. But this particular example is even more rare. Not sold to the public, this dealer backed drag car. The already amazing engine was build to Holman Moody NASCAR specs and stroked to 525 cubic inches.

The Boss 429's were created so Ford could qualify for NASCAR competition. The rules stated the engine needed to be installed in at least 500 production cars. And even though Ford's car of choice for NASCAR was the Torino, there was nothing in the rules stating the production car needed to be the same model. The Mustang was the clear choice from a sales standpoint and hence the Boss 429 was born.

2008 Roush P-51A Mustang Fastback - Sale Price $100,000
In addition to the more typical classic Mustangs, there were several late model and specialty cars sold this year. A good example is this Gray and Black 2008 Roush P51A. This particular car is #104 of 151 built. These Roush Mustangs had the 4.6 liter completely rebuilt and upgraded to handle the conservatively rated 510 horsepower and 510 ft/lb of torque, which is made possible by the RouchCharger Supercharger system.

1965 Mustang K-code Convertible - Sale Price $73,700
Here's a lovely example of how much value these first generation Mustangs still hold. A great combination of the much desired convertible body style and the rare K code Hi-Po 289 engine. All topped off with a 4 speed transmission, Pony interior, factory Air Conditioning and the GT package.

This car is one you have to see in person to appreciate. The restoration was simply immaculate, the paint perfect and the interior flawless. This car has won numerous awards and has been featured in several magazine photo shoots.; and for good reason!

And in addition to it's historic value as an example of the great first Pony car, this particular car also has a little bit of Rock and Roll, having been owned by sons of the late Ricky Nelson.

This example appears to be pretty well stripped, but maybe not a lost cause completely. The doors, interior, front fenders, hood and glass all apparently migrated somewhere else. Maybe they're tucked away in the barn shown in the photos!

It could be a fun project if someone with the right vision finds her...and if she's not rusted out too badly.

Quite clearly that the 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang was one of the most successfully advertised and promoted introductions in automotive history. Much of this was due to the car itself of course, but Ford's marketing team didn't just let those popular pony cars sell themselves. They worked hard to keep the public interested in the hot new sports car that we now know as the Classic Mustang.

And so, only weeks after it's debut on April 17, 1964 the marketing team already had it's first special edition Mustang promotion. The Mustang was selected to be the pace car at the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Ford took full advantage of this prestigious honor to not only publicize the new Mustang, but also to create a special edition Pace Car replica.

The official Pace Cars were all covertibles and Ford provided 3 for actual race duty. Another 35 convertibles were used for parade vehicles. Although the 35 were all painted Wimbledon White and came with V8's, they weren't otherwise specially prepared cars like the 3 actual pace cars. They also created another 200 replica Pace Cars. These replicas were coupes rather than convertibles and were given away to top selling Ford dealers in a special sales competition. Lee Iacooca handed over the keys himself.

Special Features:

The 1964½ Indianapolis 500 Pace cars were all identically equipped with a 260-2bbl V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission and 3.00:1 ratio differential gears. They were all painted the same; Pace Car White with a triple blue stripe centered and running from front of the hood all the way back to the trunk lid. The sides were festooned with decals reading, "Official INDIANAPOLIS "500" PACE CAR" with a large gold "MUSTANG" on the door below a smaller "FORD" script in blue.

All had the following identical options: Power Steering, Rear Backup Lights, Spinnerless Wheel Covers, Side View Mirrors deleted, AM Radio and white interior with blue trim.

Identification:

Look for the letter C on the door data tag indicating the special Pace Car White paint.  Some restorations have revealed the words "PACE CAR" written in grease pencil under the paint of the radiator support.

You don't see a pristine example of a Classic Mustang for sale like this very often. Check out this gorgeous Shelby GT350H Hertz Rental - View Auction

I recall stories told of sailors in the late 60's coming in to port in San Diego or San Francisco and pooling their money together to "rent-a-racer" at Hertz. They'd pull that Shelby out of the Hertz rental parking lot, drive down to the local drag strip, swap out the rear tires for slicks and have a night of it!

This beautiful Shelby GT350H was originally delivered in December 1965 to JD Ball Ford in Miami.  It came equipped with the Hertz Special Wheels, Radio, & Brake Booster. With delivery and inspection, the total invoice price to Hertz was a whopping $3,887.45. After a little over a year with Hertz, the car came back to JD Ball Ford and was subsequently sold.  JD Ball purchased it from Hertz for $2,800.

The car is pretty much spotless and will disappoint absolutely no one.  Everything on the car can best be described as "as new".  The photographs give a very good representation of this classic mustang but if you have any special requests or particular questions, do not hesitate to call me.

This was one special edition classic Mustang that extended beyond just Mustangs to include the 1970 Torino Cobra and Ranchero as well. Like other regional specials in the Mustang past, the Twister Special one was limited to one DSO, which was Kansas (DSO 53). There were 96 Mustang Twisters made in 1970, all Mach 1's with consecutively numbered VIN's built at the Dearborn Ford plant. The cars were identically equipped except for the engine/transmission combos. Half of the 96 produced got the new 351C-4V (Cleveland) and half the 428 SCJ (Super Cobra Jet). Both 4 speed manual and C6 automatics were used. All were clad in Grabber Orange paint with a "Twister Special" tornado decal on the rear quarter panels (see photos below)

But the Twister Specials did more than just look the part. Unlike many regional specials that were just paint and badges, the Twisters were built for performance. The suspension was beefed up with the competition suspension and drag pack packages plus F70x14 polyglass tires. Front power disc brakes helped keep the healthy engines in check. And if the bright orange paint with black accents didn't clue you in to it's performance the shaker hood scoop would leave little doubt that this was a true Muscle Car.

Identification: The 1970 Mustang Twisters were all Mach 1's and had VIN's starting with 0F05M118xxx or 0F05R118xxx (M = 351-4V and R = 428 SCJ)

Perhaps one of the best known of the limited edition classic Mustangs is the 1968 California Special, or GT/CS. Most Mustang veterans and even casual enthusiasts have heard of it, yet false info and rumor still abound on the net.

The California Special roots started with "Little Red", a hand built experimental Shelby coupe. Shelby's were only offered in fastbacks and convertibles, but there was enough interest in expanding to the coupe body style that a prototype was mocked up. Although the Shelby coupe idea was ultimately scrapped, the groundwork was laid for the California Special. Borrowing heavily from the Shelby parts bins, the GT/CS was the most elaborate special edition Mustang yet, going way beyond the typical fender badge or special paint.

The GT/CS was unveiled at a Ford dealer party at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The advertising tag-line was "California Made it Happen" although in truth the GT/CS was sent to sales districts beyond just California. Kansas City, Dallas, L.A., San Jose, Salt Lake, Seattle, Phoenix and Canada were all eligible DSO's to sell this limited edition pony. (A Denver DSO (51) made it a High Country Special)

What made the 1968 California Special more significant then any other limited edition Mustang to date was the extent of the factory modifications. Borrowing from Shelby parts, the entire look of the car was changed making it into something immediately recognizable as a special Mustang.

The front end featured factory fog lights set in a blacked out grille. The fogs were originally Marchals and then Lucas after a CA recall. The hood featured integral turn signals and factory twist style hood locks, the same as used on the 1968 Shelby. Starting at the front headlight buckets a unique triple side stripe ran down the length of the car, terminating just past the simulated side scoops. On the scoops, cut into the tape stripe was the GT/CS insignia. These scoops are very similar to the Shelby models, but unique to the GT/CS because they were non-functional. Continuing past the stripes to the rear quarter panels you find "California Special" in a chrome trim script font.

The tail end is where the Shelby influence is unmistakable. The fiberglass trunk lid has an integral "duck tail" spoiler with matching fiberglass quarter panel extensions. These are direct Shelby part numbers. As are the wide, horizontal taillights and fiberglass taillight panel. Although many think so, these wide tail lights are not sequential like you would find on Cougars or T-birds. On the deck lid is the "Mustang" script typically found on standard Mustang front fenders. The tape stripe continues along the rear edge of the trunk spoiler and turns down the quarter panel extensions. Topping everything off is a unique pop-off gas cap with the running horse in the center.

Blackout grille. rectangular fog lamps. Functional louvered hood with integral turn signals. Shelby-style rear end - a sassy spoiler, full-edge striping. Wide horizontal taillights. Pop-open gas cap. On the sides, simulated air scoops with "GT/CS" insignia. Special stripes. Naturally, GT/CS includes every other standard that's made Mustang famous. Bucket seats. Leather-smooth vinyl trim. Yet another regional special, the Cardinal Edition (or Cardinal Special) was released to help spur sales in the NC and VA markets.  What made this "special" special was primarily the Candy Apple Red paint and the unique diamond shaped emblem on the B pillar featuring a Cardinal head. See the dealer's newspaper ad below for the other features of this classic Mustang. (Dig that crazy grammar of those 60's advertising execs at Ford!)

A vintage newspaper ad from March 22nd, 1968 reads:

"Look what you get in our specially priced Cardinal Edition Mustang. 200-cu. in. six, special emblems, flip open chromed gas cap, black interior, GT stripe, wheel lip moldings, special paint, wheel covers.

Limited number specially built for N.C. and VA only. First come, first save at your Ford Dealer's now!

As a starter, we took America's No. 1 sports car (the one that's also No. 1 in resale value) We added all the extra goodies listed the in the picture. And you can have it even jazzier than that via a long, long list of options we're offering. All this and a very special low price, too! Hurry...they won't last long!"

Limited edition Mustangs were never more plentiful than in 1967-68. Between factory created regional specials and dealer created oddities, the Mustang buyer of the late 60's had some interesting choices.

The 1968 Gold Nugget Special (also called Golden Nugget) was primarily a special paint color; Sunlit Gold with a black vinyl roof, black-out hood and black striping. The paint code was Y5 and the DSO is 74-1111, indicating Seattle and then 1111 for special order. There's rumor that these Gold Nugget Specials could also be painted other colors, as indicated by the window sticker below showing Corporate Yellow. However, this particular window sticker is a reproduction, not an original, so the facts aren't 100% conclusive on the issue of custom special paint. Note the newspaper ad below also talks about a dash plaque with the customer's name. Talk about a one-off Mustang!

A newspaper ad for the Gold Nugget Special reads as follows:

Although the vintage ad states 525 were built, subsequent research by Marti Auto Works shows 481 according to Ford build records.

Identification: Like many of the special paint Specials, the 6 digit DSO is the key to identifying a Gold Nugget Special. Look for DSO of 74-1111 (74 = Seattle DSO and 1111 = special order) Production dates have also been narrowed down to Jan - Feb of 1968.
